Hydrogen
USG Blexen GmbH is planning to store hydrogen at its site in Nordenham-Blexen in the future.

At the Blexen site, energy has been strategically stored for decades as petrol and crude oil in the 8 caverns in the salt dome under Nordenham-Blexen. To support the energy transition that is underway, an additional energy carrier – hydrogen (H2) – is to be added via new caverns.
We have initiated the exploration permitting procedure by applying to the Lower Saxony State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) to explore for mineral resources. With this licence application, we have applied for approval to mine rock salt and the salts occurring in the same deposit with the long-term intention of constructing and operating an underground storage facility for H2 products.
Among other things, we recently submitted a connection request to the new hydrogen core network and the planned pipeline from the Oldenburg area, via Nordenham to Bremerhaven, and are pursuing various feasibility studies as the basis for further investment decisions.
Along with our partners in the H2 Marsch hydrogen alliance, we are confident that the Wesermarsch region and the Blexen cavern site will play an key role in the H2 market ramp-up in northwest Europe.
